Day Three

Chapman’s Peak, swimming with penguins away from the crowds, and Cape Point.

The thinking

Yesterday they looked down on this coastline from a helicopter. Today they drive it, and the difference is the whole point: what was a shape in the window becomes something they can smell, swim in and stand on.

Chapman’s Peak begins almost at the lodge gate, so the finest road in the Cape is the first thing they do. It is the longest day in the vehicle, so it is built to be unhurried, with stops chosen for the light rather than the car park, and a lunch nobody is dragged away from.
