Day Four

Over the mountains, and into the Karoo by lunch.

The thinking

Away straight after breakfast, so the afternoon at Sanbona is a real one rather than an arrival.

Through a gorge in the Langeberg on a road cut by hand a hundred and fifty years ago, and then the land changes completely: red earth, thorn trees, mountains standing on their own, and space in every direction.

Malaria-free, which on a journey with children means no tablets and no conversation about it.

The day, hour by hour

The family lodge, above the Bellair Dam — with a lawn to run on. Children are welcome here, which is not true of every camp on the reserve.
