Over the mountains, and down to Hemel-en-Aarde for lunch.
The top level makes this journey by helicopter. At this level we take the road, and it is one of the best in the country: out of Stellenbosch and over the mountains by the Franschhoek Pass, with the whole valley falling away behind.
Then down through the Overberg to the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, heaven and earth, for lunch on the ridge, then past Hermanus and along the coast to the lagoon at Arabella.
The old Huguenot village, and coffee on the main street for anyone who wants it.
The road climbs out of the valley in long bends, with the vineyards laid out below. We stop at the top for the view.
A food and wine pairing on the ridge above Walker Bay, each course made for one of the estate’s wines. Afterwards, a walk through the sculpture garden.
Half an hour along the coast to Arabella, on the Bot River lagoon with the Kogelberg mountains behind it.
A long day deserves a quiet evening: a drink on the terrace as the light goes over the lagoon, and dinner at the hotel.
