Visitors to Africa
Seal Island, a short boat ride out of Hout Bay, under the Sentinel.
Thousands of Cape fur seals live on the rocks. We go out by boat, slip into the water in thick wetsuits, masks and fins, and float at the edge of the kelp while the young seals come in to look at us. You only need to be comfortable swimming. The Atlantic here is cold, even in summer, and the boat goes out only when the sea is calm enough.
The seals are wild. Most days they come close to play; on some they keep their distance.
