Bareback through the Atlantic surf at Pearly Beach.
After six days of moving, this is a day with one thing in it worth getting up for, and nothing else required.
Swimming the horses in the Atlantic, bareback, through the surf at Pearly Beach. Not a walk along the sand, but out into the waves on a horse with no saddle, with a professional outfit and horses that have done it all their lives. Nobody needs to be able to ride: anyone new to it goes in with a handler on each side, so the whole party can do it together. Here it is. I will be in the water with them.
About an hour and a quarter along the coast, through Hermanus and past Gansbaai.
An hour on the horses. Towels, a change of clothes and something hot to drink on the beach afterwards.
Something simple, looking at the water.
The cliff path and the galleries of Hermanus, the paths up into Fernkloof above the bay with proteas the size of dinner plates, a round on Arabella’s own championship course, the spa, or simply the lagoon.
The last evening on the coast: the cliff path at sunset, a table in town, and back to Arabella afterwards. Tomorrow they leave the sea for the Karoo.
