Day Eight

A penguin goes home, and then the mountain.

The thinking

Yesterday they met penguins. Today they help look after them.

A morning behind the scenes at SANCCOB in Table View — not the public tour, but the pens where the birds recover, with jobs to do and people who do this every day. It was started in 1968 by a woman working out of her own house, and now takes in about two and a half thousand seabirds a year, fifteen hundred of them African penguins. Four in five of those penguins go back to the sea.

Then the mountain, and a walk along the top that almost no visitor takes.
